Great quote I just found

I thought this quote was important.  I know I've always thought that national rivalries were just the larger version of high school rivalries, then college...  Thinking of yourself as an American first and a human second is exactly backwards.

“All wars are civil wars, because all men are brothers… Each one owes infinitely more to the human race than to the particular country in which he was born.” - Francois Fenelon

All the best to all of you out there, no matter which man-made…

Resilience—Do you break, bruise or bounce when stuff happens?

Drop a light bulb on the floor and it shatters.  Drop an apple and it bruises.  Drop a hard rubber ball and it bounces back—good as new.  What about you? Every single one of us experiences a variety of events every day. …

Show me your persistence papers please...

“Thankfully, persistence is a great substitute for talent.” -Steve Martin

Keep going, failures are checkpoints on the way to success.  They'll want to see your proof of persistence to let you pass on to the next checkpoint.  There's no way to know how many checkpoints you'll pass on your journey, so bring your friends, enjoy the ride, and remember, you can't drive forward with your eyes in the rear view mirror...

Do Something Kind

John Wooden once said, “You can’t live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you.”

One simple way you can brighten another’s day, while making a contribution to our world in the process, is by practicing random kindness. Random acts of…

Managing Fibromyalgia

I have suffered with fibromyalgia for most of my life and I am now 70 years old.  It is a distressing condition that can go undetected for years;  I was 60 when I was diagnosed.  I've had a full life considering but with a huge burden strapped to my back that has limited my potential and at times brought me down to the ground for a spell.  It's incurable and therefore untreatable.  Obviously it becomes more intrusive with age.  I have studied and researched the condition thoroughly and now…

Take Time for Life

"The best gift we can give our children is our time"

This is the way I live my life with my 13 year old son and is the message behind our blog, Take Time for Life.

In 2002 my older brother died of cancer...he went to the doctor for a routine checkup...was diagnosed with cancer a year later he was gone.

My brother loved everything about the outdoors...spending time with his family in the mountains of Colorado…

Work Less—Live SMARTer!

Do you think you work too hard?  You’re not alone.  Many people I talk to, especially those younger with families, report being over-worked, overwhelmed and clearly unable to take even a moment to pause and…

My Word for 2012

“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” -Martin Luther King, Jr.

Last year, a friend of mine gave me a clever and wonderful idea: to choose a “word for the year” and to let this chosen word be the “theme” in which your year is centered around. For 2011 my word was “more” and…

Five Question Friday

Here I am with The Thinker in Paris. This pretty much sums up my morning.

This past week for me was not unlike a roller-coaster ride. On Monday morning, I felt amped to start my new week, as if I was anxiously waiting to begin the ride, and even tweeted: “I am determined to make…

A chance for compassion

I had a chance to practice what I preach tonight.  After dinner with a good friend, I was dropped off where I was parked outside the flea market I run.  Before heading home, I drove a lap around the building to see if there was anyone sleeping or drinking in our covered areas, which happens fairly often.  I found someone sleeping in the corner, got out of my car and told him that he couldn't sleep there.  He told me he wasn't going to leave, so I said he could either leave now or I'd have to…

Lead By Example

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that you have probably heard the quote “You must be the change you wish to see in the world” by Mahatma Gandhi. I, for one, see this quote everywhere. It frequents books, blogs, Facebook status updates, tweets, and heck, I’ve even seen it on bumper…

My Healing Journey-Being Grateful

As I look back at the last 45 years of my life I realize now how much anger, bitterness, sadness, and loneliness dominated my life over the past two decades.  From an outside perspective it was hard to detect it.  That deep within me seethed a deep resentment, frustration, loneliness, and anger over so many things.  I'd built so many barriers and wrapped even more layers of protection around me that it's hard to know which is the real me anymore.  So much of my life here was not really…

Complainers Aren't Gainers

One of my all-time favorite quotes.

Do you know someone, or are you someone, that takes your everyday life for granted? I constantly hear people complaining (I’m guilty of this too!) about their everyday life, involving school, their jobs, and/or their various tasks…
